Osteopaths treat muscle and joint pain anywhere in the body using a range of specialised hands-on techniques, including massage, joint manipulation, trigger-point therapy, stretching and exercise prescription. We adopt a holistic approach, applying the principle that a person's well-being depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues working smoothly together. We treat the whole body and not just the painful area, tackling the cause and not just the symptoms, and our overall aim is to restore the optimal functioning of the body and alleviate pain.

Modern medical acupuncture, also known as dry needling or Western acupuncture, is specifically used for the treatment of muscle and joint pain.

The needles are gently inserted into muscle trigger points - the tender nodules or knots within your muscle. Modern medical acupuncture is thought to work in a number of different ways, including by:

- Increasing blood flow locally to the inserted needle.
- Decreasing muscle tension.
- Decreasing substance p, a neurotransmitter associated with inflammation and the pain process.
- Increasing the release of endorphins that block pain signals.
- Modulating pain, both at a spinal cord level and within the brain.
- Modern medical acupuncture is particularly effective when used in conjunction with osteopathy or sports massage.

Barry is a structural osteopath who combines two decades of experience as a manual therapist and personal trainer to provide a unique approach to treating pain and injury, restoring full movement and getting his patients back to full health and fitness as fast as possible. ####Background Irish-born Barry began his journey as a manual therapist 20 years ago when he started his training as a Sports Therapist in Belfast. After qualifyingas a Sports Therapist in 1997, he moved to London where he obtained his BSc (Hons) in Sports and Exercise Sciences at the University of Roehampton, gaining a firm grounding in sports physiology, anatomy, sports psychology, sports biomechanics and motor control.

After completing his first degree, Barry spent a number of years working as a personal trainer and sports therapist in London, Hertfordshire and Portugal. During this time, Barry worked in various gyms, corporates and sports clubs, assisting clients from every walk of life with a wide range of fitness and therapy needs.

It was while working as a sports therapist within an osteopathy practice that Barry observed the dramatic benefits of osteopathy. It didn’t take long for him to realise that becoming an osteopath was the natural progression for him and the perfect way to combine his strong aptitude for manual therapy, his commitment to relieving muscle and joint pain and his experience of working with a wide-range of people to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

After five years of training at the London School of Osteopathy, Barry qualified as an osteopath in 2010 and then spent almost three years practising in a busy osteopathy clinic in Singapore. He returned to London in 2013 to establish The Moving Body and has loved working with patients from across London ever since.
